[dropcap]F[/dropcap]ebruary usually brings another month of typical winter weather for Abaco with pleasant temperatures, plenty of sun and little rain.  It is one of the coolest months with average temperatures ranging from 65°F at night to a delightful 80°F during the day, similar to those in January.  It is also one of the windiest.  Fortunately, the occasional cold fronts usually pass through in a day or two and seas calm and we are back out on the reef diving.

With the relatively calm seas, little or no current and no plankton bloom, visibility is normally outstanding.  Water temperature is averaging 73 degrees, so a wetsuit is highly recommended. This is the time of year when we actually notice seasonal changes in the marine environment. The larger fish appear more docile and the reef seems even more spectacular and colorful. Winter brings the sharks, spotted eagle rays, grouper and turtles up into warmer water and onto the more shallow areas of reef.  These sights are even more amazing when the sunlight penetrates the water to reflect the amazing colors of the reef and its reef dwelling inhabitants.

For fishing enthusiasts, Abaco has two underwater National Parks – Fowl Cay and Sandy Cay.  No fishing or capture of marine life is allowed in these areas. Outside of these areas, Nassau grouper season remains closed for conservation reasons from December 1 through February 28.  It is wise to familiarize yourself with the protected areas rather than face a stiff fine and/or confiscation of your vessel.

The Full Snow Moon occurs on Tuesday, February 3 at 6:09 p.m..

For those of you simply looking for some sunshine or needing to escape the frigid North, February is a great time to visit Abaco before spring breakers and summer crowds.  We recommend making reservations in advance. When not diving or snorkeling, there are many other activities to consider, such as renting a car for a day to explore the beaches and pine forests of Great Abaco, bird watching, bonefishing, island hopping and catching a ferry to one of the offshore cays, or just relaxing. There is plenty to do, or not do, and we are here to help make your stay a memorable one.

We look forward to seeing you ‘on island’ soon!
