May is like a 31-day grab bag; reach into it and who knows what you might pull out. Ten-foot north swell? Tropical storm surf? Early Summer doldrums? Or all of the above? It’s one of the hardest months to predict what will happen. If you’re a visitor to the Commonwealth, and just planning to stay for a long weekend, well, you might get skunked. The swell events will be more sporadic and you might arrive having just missed the last swell and sit waiting weeks for the next one. But if that’s the case, find the breaks that work on small waves and you can usually find something to fool around on if you aren’t too picky about, for instance, a little onshore wind. Up until press time (April 13) the wind had blown from a southeast window almost every day. It meant a few Portuguese man-o-wars had shown up here in Eleuthera, and undoubtedly some other islands. These beauties are easy to spot, avoid (ouch!) but appreciate them.

SURF CAMP X UPDATE: Spots remain for Teen Week (June 22-27) and Tween Week (July 6-11). There are day and overnight options for this fun, outdoor-centric camp now in its tenth year. Call or email yours truly to be a part of it.

The Pineappleman Sprint Triathlon & 5k fun run/walk is June 6!
