[dropcap]C[/dropcap]old fronts will continue to push through the northern Bahamas during February and the water temperature will drop to its lowest of the year. Wind can make casting a challenge when the cold fronts do pass through, so a little heavier gear is a consideration. The fish will be holding in the deeper water and channel edges. When we do get some warmer days, you will find bonefish moving onto the flats that have been warmed by the mid-day sun with the incoming tide. Afternoons with an incoming tide is your best fishing window. The fish at this time of the year will be good size and you will find lots of singles and doubles. Crab and shrimp will work well as natural baits. Don’t forget that Bimini has excellent permit fishing and February and March are great months to target this species. Bimini permit will typically weigh in the 20-pound range and perhaps a few larger ones. There will be plenty of mutton snapper and grouper (Nassau grouper closed season until March 1st) on the nearshore reefs. Cut squid and conch will work just fine.
