Mr. Blue Suit (blue marlin) has finally shown up, Capt. Matt and his vessel Empty Nest recording the first blue marlin catch and release just north of Bimini in late April. May should see a stronger showing of these great fish. The marlin have been averaging up to 200 pounds, while a 400 to 500 pound blue marlin has been recorded almost every season for the past five years.

The wahoo have still been hanging around and the dolphin catch has been strong. High speed trolling has not been a deterrent in catching wahoo as they have been snapping most dolphin lure spreads. I have been using 200 pound leader material to the hook, (instead of wire) in order not to scare off the dolphin, as they have been known to shy away from wire leader.

Yellow tail, grouper, snapper all have been strong just south of Cat and over by the Ginger Bread Grounds.

Tuna has shown up and I expect record catches for May. Most are up to 20 pounds, but I had one report of a yellowfin tuna being caught, which rocked the scales at 77 pounds Northeast of Issacs. If you don’t have live bait, don’t waste your time!

The end of April has finally shown us some very favorable weather and a sneak preview of a very favorable May. Boats as small as 22 feet have now been making the crossing and enjoying some great fishing and snorkeling.

Keep in mind when crossing with one engine in a small boat, to think safety first, not just “fishing, beer and let’s just get there”. Cross over with another boat, just in case of a breakdown.

The weather has cooperated and with this little Island in The Stream, (Bimini) it’s no wonder we hold some of the top world records.

Until next tide, chase your dreams!
