Surf Fishing Forecast May 2016

Coastal Angler Surf Fishing May 2016 Sea Turtle Conservancy
Coastal Angler Brevard Surf Fishing Forecast May 2016 by John Detmer

May is a transitional month into summer surf fishing and also the start of the Annual Sea Turtle Nesting Season (May 1st to October 31st) along our Brevard County Beaches. This is a time when surf anglers, visitors, and families can see nature at its best. Loggerhead, Green and Leatherback Sea Turtles come ashore and lay their eggs on our beaches.

I expect May to be hot with westerly winds and calm seas which will be marked by good catches of
whiting , drum, bonnethead sharks and left over bluefish. I suggest fishing the early morning, raising tides (6-9 am) and the same time (6-9 pm) in the evenings. Clean water is a must for surf anglers and it’s worth it to move from beach to beach to get the cleanest/clearest water to fish. Remember to put sunscreen on at home then wash your hands like a doctor before an operation. You don’t want to pass the sunscreens oil and scent on your hands to your bait which the fish won’t eat.

Sea Turtle Walks: – Barrier Island Sanctuary – 8385 S. Highway A1A – Melbourne Beach

Learn about the threatened loggerhead sea turtles nesting within the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge attracts more nesting loggerhead sea turtles than virtually anyplace on earth, more endangered green sea turtles than anywhere in the states, and the world’s largest sea turtle, the endangered leatherback! Walks are hosted by Sea Turtle Conservancy and Friends of the Carr Refuge with hopes that the experience will create sea turtle stewards and inspire future naturalists. Beginning May 1, 2016 – visit www.seaturtlewalks.org – to make your reservation.- Reservations are for Monday thru Friday, June, and July with a limit of 22 each night. A Donation of $15 is non-refundable. Credit card payment only.
