Cooler Temperatures and Red-Hot Action

By Capt. Greg Peralta:

October brings cooler air and water temperatures to our coastline, as well as red-hot fishing action. Predators such as trout and bluefish will be gorging themselves in preparation for the lean winter months. Locating a trout or bluefish feeding frenzy is pretty simple, just look for the birds. Baitfish, such as glass minnows, being pursued from below will congregate on the surface. This makes them an easy meal for all manner of sea birds.

Upon finding a feeding frenzy, select a lure that mimics the size and color of the baitfish being eaten. Historically, Z-Man StreakZ 3.75 on an 1/8-ounce jig and Lucky Craft Pointer 65SP and 78SP lures are excellent producers. Casting one of these into the frenzy typically produces an immediate strike. A rapid twitch, twitch and pause retrieve cadence is a good place to start. Experiment with the retrieve until the fish tell you what they want.

October is a beautiful month in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Cool mornings, warm afternoons and red-hot fishing action make for a great experience on the water.
