Indian Pass/St. Joe Bay/East Bay Fishing Report: August 2014

redfish release

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]ugust is a hot month here along Panama City and the Forgotten Coast, and this year will be no different. The soaring temps can make fishing tough during this month; however, you can still have a productive and fun day on the water. In St. Joe Bay, focus on the deeper grass flats and pot holes scattered throughout the bay for trout, flounder, and the occasional redfish. Usually in depths of 6-8 feet is where you will find the majority of your bites. Live bait works best because fish are looking to be less active and feed on larger baits that will fill them up quicker. Live Alewives and/or pinfish are the baits of choice. These live baits can be fished free-lined under a popping cork using a longer mono leader, about 18-20 inches, and 2/0 circle hook. Baits can also be soaked on the bottom using a Carolina-rig with a 1/2 oz. egg sinker. Spanish mackerel are also very plentiful this month.

Slow troll using a Clark’s Spoon in silver color or mackerel rigs such as Christmas tree rigs on the deeper ledges that drop off from about 8-20 feet. Once hooked up, blind cast a spoon or large Mirro-Lure or Mirro-Dine to pick up a few more. Make sure to use a wire leader because their sharp teeth will cut you off in a matter of seconds. Remember, tackle isn’t cheap anymore. Good luck out there, and if you need help or guide services, just give me a call.
