Lake Jackson Fishing Report: August 2014

Lake Jackson Bass
Heather Frost with nice 7 pounder caught at Lake Jackson on a recent guided trip.

Lake Jackson is still full of water but the bass fishing is pretty tough. Even night tournaments are tough because there is so much cover and lots and lots of new water for the fish to hide in. The best times to fish on Lake Jackson this year is during low light conditions. Only on this lake can you fish all night with little worries of hitting anything except maybe a stray gator that forgot to get out of the way! Anyway, I find top water lures are best early and late in the day, especially for the big ones. Buzz baits or big topwater popping baits that draw a lot of attention are at the top of my topwater list. Oh, too many tops in that last line? Oh well, I’m getting tired after an awesome week of fishing and sun.

And I do mean fishing! This time of year is downright tough on Lake Jackson. Unless you like the heat, plan your trips from 5am until 10am, maybe 11am, then go in for a nap. Again, it doesn’t mean you can’t catch them after 11am, it’s just so doggone hot. One thing to take note of early, fish the weed lines and lily pad points or places where there’s scattered vegetation. As the sun gets higher, fish will actually move higher in the water column to take advantage of the shade from lily pads and weed clumps. Topwater frogs and swim-baits take credit for most mid-day catches. Coming in a close second would be to flip a creature bait on heavy line with a 1 oz. weight. And of course, the good old plastic worm can always catch one or two at some point.

Don’t forget the water, Gatorade, and sunscreen if you do go.

So until next time, be safe, have fun and ALWAYS wear your life jacket while boating!
