Port Canaveral Offshore

By Captain Chris Cameron

Spring is already here. Crazy to think of it. We got to fish almost every day while some people had to winterize boats and shovel snow. Lol. All we had to worry about was some windy days. For the most part fishing has been banner. Kingfish, black fin tuna and sailfish have been on fire.

I would love to talk about how March is historically the cobia time frame to see all these free swimmers and manta rays migrating holding countless fish but truth be told we had 2 days last march that were “cobia” days. I’m sure some of you reading this can concur. Huhmmm, should you see the elusive cobia swim by this March Madness, have your buck tails ready. We like to tip the buck tails with a whole squid for the scent and that live look. 50lb mono leader is just fine. No need for fluorocarbon. When you see your cobia, lead your cast and jig that buck tail erratically. Get them Fired Up. Make them eat it. It helps to have a live bunker ready as well. You can always follow up if they don’t lite up on the first bait. I have noticed that you should only throw one thing at a time at them. I have been out when all 4 guys on the boat throw something at them and the fish literally have no idea or gets spooked. Throw 1 bait at a time. Cobia will hold to almost anything, a hard edge, debris, turtles, sharks, rays and many times they swim up to the boat. If you get lucky you can make them “eat the steel”, (free gaff)

Cobia will be holding in that shallow water this time of year. Anywhere from 20 foot out to the 55 foot area. Look for that 70 degree water. 72 being ideal. Patrick AFB is a good area to look as is the bouy 2/4 area off the shoals. Good luck finding these “brown ones”. I hope it’s more than a 2 day run this year.
