[dropcap]F[/dropcap]ortunately, August marks the turning point of summer, because this year’s heatwave has been relentless. What better way to start off the month, then snorkeling for some lobster? August 1 kicks off the spiny lobster season and it’s a sure bet, that with how hot it’s been and how clear the water’s been lots of us will use the open season as an excuse to go for a swim. Make sure you display a large dive flag while you have people in the water, and make sure to respect marked boats and divers as well. Give plenty of room while passing and also keep a sharp eye out for swimmers that may not be properly marked.

As we get towards the end of August, the constant heat should subside and it should be suitable for humans to experience the outdoors again without risk of heat stroke.

August’s highlights are the lobster season, tarpon on the beach, a limited wahoo run, and a once in blue moon mahi run. There might not be lots of any one species, but this month offers everything from cobia, kings, tarpon and permit on the beaches, to amberjack’s grouper, snapper on the wrecks, to blackfin, dolphin and wahoo on the hill, and there’s always a chance at catching a sailfish or two. The main thing about August is be ready for everything. Spinning rods, bottom rods, live bait rods, trolling rods, electric reels, and dive gear. August is a month where you use it all, but it’s worth it! Be safe, and I hope your next trip is Off The Chain!
