Know the Weather Forecast

Fall fishing is, in my opinion, as good as it gets. The days are shorter and cooler. During November I can fish all day and be ready to go again the next day. That’s a hard feat to pull off in the hot, long, dog days of summer. However, with the comfort comes uncertainty of changing weather as fronts begin to cross our areas with increased frequency.

It’s a good idea to know what the weather is going to do on the ‘day of’ being on the water. Maybe it seems ironic that I address this with today’s smart phones with weather apps. Those smart phones don’t always work, and the network can go down.

I mostly fish prefrontal weather conditions, and I have a good idea what time that front is going to hit the area before I leave the dock. I know what the predicted wind direction is going to be and how hard to expect it. I’ll even plan my fishing day around the arrival of the front to make sure I have safe passage back to the dock. If that means me leaving the protected shoreline an hour early, so be it. Those predicted winds could get really strong in a hurry as downburst fall out of stronger-than-expected storm clouds. Plan your day and know what the weather is going to do. Have fun, and be safe on the water.
