L ots to do around here in August! The brown trout fishing is still good either with fly gear or spin tackle. Fly anglers should be twitching rubber legged streamers, swinging soft hackles (wet flies), and my favorite twitching hopper patterns. For the spin guys using small Rapala’s and Panther Martin spinners will definitely bring you some success.
Smallmouth bass fishing is another great way to spend the day on the river. Fishing big bushy dry flies and poppers along the log jams and banks, awaiting a big smallie to engulf your fly is not a bad way to get it done. Streamer fishing would be another preferred method for targeting smallies. Fishing sink tips and bright lead-eyed flies subsurface is very effective also. If you’re spin fishing, floating Rapala’s, x-rap’s, and wacky worms are the most productive.
You also have summer-run steelhead this month to add to the mix. There hasn’t been a big number of them around this year but just enough to get you out of bed early in the morning to pursue. Above and below the coffer at the dam and any cold water inlet are places to find the exclusive steelhead. As August comes to an end, we will start seeing Mr. King Salmon showing up in the system. When they first start to show up, it is best to fish them in low- light times of the day, the first three hours and the last two hours of the day are best. Spinning gear with crankbaits is the preferred method for these early kings. Go with medium-heavy rods, 30-pound braid and hold on tight for a ride you won’t forget.
