Pere Marquette River Fishing Report: September 2016

Fall is creeping up fast on the banks of the Pere Marquette River, the nights are getting cooler and the leaves are starting to change. Trout fishing remains good this time of year with hoppers, ants, and beetles. The big draw however as an angler this time of year is the king salmon run. This year’s outlook is looking good, as we already have salmon in the system. Expect them to continue to trickle in throughout the month. Weather is a big factor on the run, rain and wind is a huge blessing to get the run in full swing. For salmon in this early season I enjoy trying to chase them with streamers on the swing or strip. Lures such as spinners and stickbaits (Thundersticks) can be very productive fished slow to med retrieve on medium to light spinning tackle. Braided line is a must for trying to coax these fresh from Lake Michigan brutes out of the wood. As the salmon move up stream to spawn, trout fishing becomes productive fishing behind the kings and their spawning redds. Try small egg imitations under a float, a lot of this is sight fishing for these browns and rainbows, which can be a lot of fun this time of year. This is one of my favorite times of year, football starts, fishing is great, and bird hunting is even better. So try to get out and enjoy it, before we know it the white stuff will be all over the ground.
