Upper Pere Marquette River Fishing Report: December 2014

Jeff Hubbard

T hings are looking a lot better for the rivers of West Michigan. We finally got the rain we needed to bring the rivers up and give them a nice stain. The Pere Marquette is in much better shape with a little higher water and good color to it. We still have not seen a big push of steelhead enter the river as of yet. The recipe is looking a lot better now though. Last month fishing was tough with the clear water and lack of fish. The steelhead were scattered throughout the whole river system. With the water up and winter coming early again this year, we should see some new fish enter the system within the next month or two.

For flies, try Bigger Clown and Nuke Egg’s in chartreuse, pink, and tangerine. As the water gets colder try some nymphs as well. I recommend bigger hex’s, stoneflies, and green caddis. They work great in the winter months. My favorite method of fishing for these fish would be on the swung fly. Now that the temperatures are dropping, and the river has good color, go bright. With hopes of teasing a steelhead to hit it hard, try bigger leech and baitfish patterns with some flash. For more up-to-date reports check out outfittersnorth.com.
