Dauphin Island Fishing Report: April 2014

Well it’s April again, and the fishing should be on fire this month around Dauphin Island. The shoals and the south and north facing beaches start a lot of wade fishing/boat fishing. When we wade fish I like to use top water (top dogs ,Zara spooks ,bacon ,Adonis etc) and suspending baits (catch 2000,mirrowdine, bacon dank suspect), silver /black, red/white, green /silver, on all these baits. The Mississippi sound should be starting to wake up from winter, so start looking for bait piled up around Coffee Island and some of the wrecks in the sound. Grand Bay should be looking excellent as well. Redfish and Specks will be chasing all the glass minnows around, so throw some top water around the schools and you should be successful. The fish should be starting to show up at the rigs in the bay (if no fresh water arrives and messes everything up) looking for something good to eat. This is the time for live shrimp, finger mullet, croakers, pogeys (menhaden). All of these will work better under a slip cork or free lined or a small weighted bottom rig. The rigs outside the bay will be holding sheepshead, flounder, redfish (bulls). The beaches will be crawling with boats looking for cobia (lemonfish/ling), so don’t be surprised to see one or two swim by you fishing the rigs on the south side. Good luck and we’ll see you on the water. Captain Joey LapyrouseApr 1st, 2014

Alabama Gulf Coast Fishing Report: April 2014

The water has been a bit cool in March. Therefore the fishing action was a little slower. It is warming and the Spanish mackerel have appeared. Isolated king mackerel have also been caught. April fishing on the Alabama Gulf Coast should be great. We should expect warmer water and more activity. King mackerel and Spanish mackerel should be caught nearshore. Cobia should be cruising near the beach. Farther offshore you should find amberjack. Any type of live bait should attract an amberjack. You can also fish cut squid for triggerfish, vermillion snapper and white snapper. Scamp grouper and red grouper will be found in deeper water around 180 feet. As you can see, there is a lot of variety of fish to catch in April. Let's go fishing! Call today and book your next fishing adventure. Apr 1st, 2014

Mobile Bay Fishing Report: April 2014

Winter will not give up this year. Water temps are headed for the 60's and it looks like we are beginning the migration patterns. There is plenty of saltwater headed for the causeway it's just too cool right now. On the coast, Spanish Mackerel will be starting to move this month along with the Pompano. Keep an eye out for Cobia and King Mackerel to follow. Bull Reds are around the passes if you're looking for a fight. Inshore, the shoals and grass flats along Dauphin Island, Shell Bank Reef, and the rigs inside the bay are a good bet for Specs. Reds will be cruising the shore line and oyster bars.Apr 1st, 2014

Dauphin Island Fishing Report: April 2014

With warmer temperatures day and night, the Island and Bay area fishing has heated up after a long, cold, wet, nasty winter. The bait fish and shrimp will be on the move and the specks will follow; The local bait shops now have good live shrimp and its worth your time to get a few for your trip. Fish these under a rattling cork or popping cork with a #8 bronze treble hook on about 2 feet of mono leader; I use 12 pound mono or flouro leader, the lighter the better. Apr 1st, 2014

Dauphin Island Fishing Report: March 2014

Is it summer yet? God, I hope so! This hasn’t been the coldest or wettest winter I can remember, but then again, every time the temperature drops below 60 degrees I just want to crawl up into my cave and hibernate until the sun comes back out ad warms our world up again. I mean, is there anything better than the Tampa Bay area in springtime?Mar 1st, 2014

Spring Cleaning

My type of “spring cleaning” is a mess of sheepshead on the fish-cleaning table. The water is warming quickly and the wind is calming, so more anglers and spearfisherman are starting to venture into the gulf.Mar 1st, 2014

Mobile Bay Fishing Report: March 2014

The month of March already! March madness is in the air. The fish are wanting to transition into the coming spring time patterns, but there is still plenty of cold muddy water pouring out of the Mobile river. March can usually be one of the harder months to fish. The trout seem to dissapear for days on before you can get on a good bite. The good thing is the sheepshead are just piling up around any structure with a good barnacle presence on it. Mar 1st, 2014

Mobile Bay Fishing Report: March 2014

March is always the kickoff of the inshore fishing starting to come alive. The water temps usually start to rise and the fish become more active in shallow water. March is a transition month where the fish are moving from a deep water winter pattern to a shallow water spring pattern. I like to target 3 species in March and those are Sheepshead, Redfish, and Speckled Trout.Mar 1st, 2014
