Mobile Bay Fishing Report: February 2014

rrr.. Enough of the cold weather already! January was a cold month. The fishing was hit or miss depending on the weather. The trout were showing up in some of their winter places in the deeper spots in the Mobile River, Dog River and Fowl River. The redfish are still thick in West Fowl River and along the coast. They are hitting the Voodoo shrimp fished under a popping cork or live shrimp if you can find them. The trout have been hitting hard baits, fished slow, or grubs on jigheads. A rattletrap also has had some success bringing in some nice trout. The normal colors for winter time are catching the trout, opening night or root beer colored grubs from Saltwater Assassin are my personal choices. Feb 1st, 2014

Alabama Gulf Coast: February 2014

There were a few people fishing in January. There were catches of bull redfish nearshore. Some nice triggerfish were caught on 6 hour charters. February should give a little warmer weather and more activity. Bull redfish should continue to be caught nearshore. Triggerfish season opened January 1st and there are some very nice ones being caught within 20 miles on the 6 hour charters. What an awesome tasting fish. Mobile Bay Fishing Report: February 2014

Winter is here and it's as cold as any winter that I can remember. The water temps are is the 50's. This should be the coldest we'll see this year. Likewise the fishing is as slow as it will be until the middle of the summer. Bait fish have headed for the deeper water to keep warmFeb 1st, 2014

Dive Flag Awareness

The diver down flag indicates there are scuba divers and/ or snorkelers in the water. Boaters and PWC’s should remain 200 ft. away from the flag. If you need to approach within 100 feet, use extreme caution, go slow and look for bubbles. The divers and snorkelers also have a responsibility to remain within 50’ of their flag. The intention of the flag isn’t a restriction, but to keep everyone safe, so boaters and divers can all enjoy the water together.Feb 1st, 2014

Lengthy Gulf Restoration Plan Needs to Dive Deeper

If you're like me, the recent holiday season has erased some of your memory (I think it’s all the sweets), and you may be in need of a refresher on where we left off in the Gulf restoration process. Recently, the Deepwater Horizon Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) trustees released a long-awaited draft Early Restoration Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) and Phase III Environmental Restoration Plan (ERP). This was exciting news for the Gulf of Mexico, because the PEIS is critical for laying the groundwork for a comprehensive, long-term and integrated restoration process in the wake of the BP oil disaster. Ocean Conservancy’s experts have been going through the nearly 2,500- page document with a fine tooth comb over the last several weeks, and we are pleased to present you with our preliminary views.Feb 1st, 2014

The Wharf Boat and Yacht Show Returns to Orange Beach

In just a few short years it’s become one of the most popular events on the Gulf Coast: The Wharf Boat and Yacht Show. And this year’s show, slated for March 27- 30, 2014, promises to be more incredible than ever before. Show organizers expect over $90 million in boats and marine products on display this year, including more than 125 in-water vessels and an additional 250-plus boats displayed on land. It’s become one of the most exciting outdoor, in-water shows on the Gulf Coast but rather focusing on the sheer size, the organizers instead highlight quality—there’s literally something for everyone, whether a newcomer to boating or a seasoned tournament veteran.Feb 1st, 2014

Dauphin Island Fishing Report: February 2014

Well the cold winter temps have been here now for a while now and the trout still remain in the deeper holes in the tidal rivers adjacent to Mobile Bay and the Sound; Live bait will be very hard if not impossible to find so you will need to use soft plastic shrimp and minnow imitations like the vudu shrimp, gulp swim mullet or shrimp or yozuri crystal shrimp and minnows. Youwillneedtofishasslowasyou can and make sure the baits stay in contact with the bottom, jig lightly, and again, I cannot stress enough, if you think you are fishing too slow, slow down more. The do nothing drift will continue to work as well in the middle or deeper parts of the tidal rivers. Something to look forward to in mid to late month and on into the coming month or two is the Sheepshead spawn. They will school in huge numbers around any good structure like the gas wells and any rock piles or jetties. For these, try to find the freshest dead shrimp you can if you cannot get your hands on any live shrimp. Feb 1st, 2014

How to Find a Fishing Guide

Fishing is often portrayed and seen as something that is relatively easy where all that is needed to catch fish is a rod and some shrimp. It is possible to be self-taught and it is possible to learn through books, experience and practice. But if you want to learn or improve quickly and attain a higher skill level than you would otherwise, then booking some tuition with a fishing guide is the best option.Feb 1st, 2014

Scuba Diving, A Family Affair

With iPods, smart phones and computers being in every room in the modern home (and most people’s pockets); face-to-face communication among family members is becoming a rarity. It isn’t uncommon for kids to text a sibling that is only steps away in another room!Jan 1st, 2014

Mobile Bay Fishing Report: January 2014

Winter is here and December has had it's share of cold. The water temps are is the 50's. The causeway has been flushed with fresh water for the winter. Bait fish have headed for the deeper water to keep warm and that's where you have to go to find specs and reds. At least until the weather starts to warm-up. On cooler days, look in the deeper parts of the creeks that flow into Mobile Bay like Bon Secour River, Fish River, Magnolia River, Dog River, Fowl River, and the Theodore Industrial Canal. Explore the small creeks in these rivers especially where the creeks flow into these rivers. On warmer days, look near the banks, close to deeper water. Work your bait slow and expect bites to be soft and slow. Live or dead shrimp on a Carolina rig on the bottom are a good bet. If you're fishing artificial bait, my favorites are a Mirrolure Glad Shad or High Tide Shrimp soft plastic on a jig head. I start with a white/ chartreuse, root beer/chartreuse, chartreuse/red, or natural shrimp rigged on a 3/8 oz jig head and if they don't go for that I go home and come back the next day.Jan 1st, 2014
