November 2016: Why Knot Fishing

Fishing Forecast

By Joe Gugino, Why Knot Fishing

It is hard to imagine that another season of saltwater fishing here on Boston’s North shore is effectively over!  But it was great to see the season go out with a bang!  Almost like clock-

work, and just like last year, the blitzes turned ON right around Columbus Day Weekend.  The weather and water temp started to get colder, and it made the fish go crazy.  There were constant feeds all along the North Shore and Southern side of Cape Ann.  Most of the fish were smaller, but there were some feeds with some huge fish as well.  And fish were being caught from shore, kayak and boat!

It was certainly a great season, and we were excited to catch many fish, many big fish, and connect with many new local anglers as well.  But now our focus in November begins to change; with your two best bets being bluefin tuna or trout fishing.

Bluefin Tuna Fishing:
The bluefin tuna bite has been HOT for the past couple months, and that should continue right through the fall.  There has been an awesome bite down in Southern New England around Cape Cod, with many anglers catching tuna on the spin rod, but the bite is also hot up here right off of Cape Ann.

Bob Cook of Fat Tuna Guides has been having a banner year for tuna, catching fish almost every trip out, and sometimes even two, or three!  We highly encourage you to get a group of friends and Charter Captain Cook, or some of the other awesome Charter Captains around Boston, and Boston’s North Shore, as well as in Southern New England.  (If you are looking for other good Charter Recommendations feel free to reach out directly or check out the WKF Endorsed Guides on our website.)

Northeast Trout Fishing:

Another great option in November is fishing for trout both here in New England and in Upstate New York.  Some of the fishiest waters for trout is only a quick couple hours west in Western Mass with either the Harrions Brothers on a Float Trip or with Patrick Barone of Early Rise Outfitters for a Wading Trip. (Check out Patrick’s monthly report to know what type of fishing to expect!)

Some of our favorite trips are those we take this time of year to head to Upstate New York to join our friends for cold days and Big Trout on the Rivers.  Last month there was some great fishing in those tributaries with the Salmon returning to the rivers, and this month those Salmon will be followed by Huge Steelhead, Brown Trout and Lake Trout.

There is nothing like catching a huge trout, on a fly rod, while it’s freezing out. Even though you may freeze waiting for the bite, the second you hook up, you warm right up!

Good luck out there this month if you choose to target tuna or trout, or any other species, and if you are an ice fisherman get excited, because winter is Coming!
