When fishing the Grand River in May, you just never know what you will catch. There are tons of opportunities to get out and catch fish with steelhead, catfish, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, walleye, pike, crappie, and more!
This month if you are looking for steelhead in the Grand River check below the dams. There won’t be a lot of steelhead, but you can find dropbacks and a fresh fish now and then. Fish the faster water with egg imitations under a float or drift them along the bottom. Spinners or plugs are more ways to search out some late spring steelhead. You can usually keep busy with other species as well.
Catfish are usually a good option if you are looking for some good action on the Grand River. You can catch channel and flathead cats this time of year so break out the heavy rods and plunk some bait in front of log jams. Good baits to use are creek chubs, alewives, shad, skein, crawlers, and shrimp. Bring out a heavy rod loaded with some 80lb braid so you can try to muscle these fish away from the logs. You never know when you will tie into that 30-plus pound fish.
Smallmouth and largemouth bass can be caught along the banks of the Grand River just about anywhere. Tubes, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, jigs, live bait, and plastics work for bass. If the water is off-color white or chartreuse baits work well, if it is running clear I usually go to more natural colors.
Walleye and pike are year round on the Grand River, and anglers can target them by pitching or trolling crankbaits. Live bait is another good option, try drifting crawlers along the bottom for walleye.
