Kayak tournament

W ant to qualify for a worldwide kayak fishing tournament? Here’s your chance.

Summit Sports is proud to announce its inaugural 2015 Kayak Fishing Tournament held in conjunction with the Border City Classic (BCC) on June 27, 2015. The BCC is a one-day kayak fishing tournament held on Lake St. Clair and Detroit River drawing anglers from both sides of the border including Ontario, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin. Participants are anglers looking to both compete and meet other anglers who share their passion for this great sport. The BCC is designed to satisfy both the ultra-competitive kayak angler as well as the first timer and family crowd.

New for 2015, the BCC welcomes Summit Sports of Bloomfield, Michigan. This sponsorship opens up the opportunity for a US angler to qualify for a shot at the 2015 Hobie Fishing Worlds Kayak Fishing Championship. Kayak manufacturer, Hobie sends the winner of this qualifier fully outfitted with Hobie gear (kayak, flight, lodging, and entry fees) to the World Kayak Fishing Championship in Chang Su, China.

The architect and founder of the BCC, Rich Offner along with Jeff Sherwood, the General Manager of Summit Sports, are the driving forces behind these tournaments. Jeff, a Carolina native, brings his extensive kayak fishing and tournament experience and is a major proponent in putting Kayak tournament fishing in Michigan on the map.

The competition starts at first light on June 27th with the captains meeting the night before. Using artificial bait, only the three largest bass by aggregate length wins. Best Canadian and best USA winner will go to China.

During the event, anglers fish for largemouth and smallmouth bass using the Catch-Photo-Release method and measuring the fish for total length. Anglers launch from several published launches along the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair on both sides of the border. They document during the day and hand in their cards in order to score their three largest fish. With the diversity of our competition’s divisions, all anglers of varying skill level have a chance at winning in some way.

At the end of the event on June 27th, the BCC and Summit will host dinner and awards on both sides of the border. Awards will be presented to the winning participants placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. There will also be random drawings for the major prizes and a special US vs. Canada Challenge Cup stacking up the three best fish from both countries.
