[dropcap]L[/dropcap]ines in the Lagoon is a junior, tri-county fishing tournament designed to raise awareness about the poor health of our Indian River Lagoon. Based out of Vero Beach, it was created by a group of teenage boys who are passionate about the safety of our lagoon. They are Bryce Hauser, Steven Croom, Michael Villafaurte, Quinn Hiaasen, Tommy Hammond, Ritter Marchant, Barrett Rhymes, and new to the group this year Bennett Collins.

Held on October 17, 2015, the tournament was held in three counties—Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River. Tournament participants were able to fish out of a boat, kayak, and or any other water craft. Fishing off of land—such as from seawalls and docks—was also allowed.

At the end of tournament, prizes were awarded at a dinner catered by Chipotle Mexican Grill. The dinner was held at the A.E. Backus Museum in Veterans’ Memorial Park in Fort Pierce. Family activities were included to make for a great event for all ages regardless of whether or not someone participated in the fishing tournament.

Dr. Edie Widder was the featured speaker at the awards dinner.

Tournament proceeds benefit the Ocean Research and Conservation Association, the Environmental Learning Center and Coastal Conservation Association, Florida.
