The first-place Kingfish at the Aug. 23 Fort Pierce Summer Slam was this 40.87-pounder caught by Wayne Beswick while fishing with the Spiced Rum III Fishing team out of Palm Beach Inlet, Fla.

Capt. Bill Wummer’s Yamaha-powered Contender fished about two hours off the Juno Ledge before the fish took a blue runner on the surface. Beswick grabbed the rod and managed to boat the hard-fighting fish.

“All week we had heard about the big fish in Fort Pierce, and the biggest we had heard around here was a 30-pound fish,” said Wummer. “I always say you can’t win without a good crew. We got the fish in and were happy, but still tried to find a bigger one. The bite lasted about three hours, and then it got very quiet the rest of the day.”

Spiced Rum III also placed second aggregate in King of the South. They were edged out by Team Pennyless by a half pound.

“We were talking all day, and it was close to the end,” said Wummer. “We told them our fish weighed 40.87, and they needed a 34.6 to take the lead. They got a 35. It was great to work with them and it is always great competition.”

Wummer gave a shout out and a big thank you to all his crew sponsors.
