School is out, and summer time is here! Which means for us kids, we have a lot more time to get out and fish. A major problem that many young anglers have when they walk into their local outdoor store or bait shop, is which lure out of the huge selection that stores carry today will work the best and be the easiest to use? Here are four lures that from my experience, are simple to use, yet produce high numbers of fish when taken out on the water.
One lure that has proven itself to catch high numbers of snook, redfish, and various other in-shore species and is as simple to use as a plastic worm is the Berkley Gulp Shrimp. These soft plastic lures are realistic, can be made weedless, and are fished with a stop and go retrieve to imitate a live shrimp swimming.
Another effective lure fished in saltwater and fresh is Yo-Zuri’s Crystal Minnow series. Although these are little more pricy, these highly reflective minnow lures can be fished effectively with a fast retrieve, a slow retrieve, or a stop and go retrieve to imitate baitfish fleeing a predator.
One lure you should certainly have in your tackle box if they’re looking for high numbers of fish is a Rapala Z-Rap Shad. This revolutionary jerk- bait is a very realistic looking bait that has an incredibly life like movement in the water. You can work this lure by twitching your rod, quickly or slowly, in order to give the X-Rap Shad the movement of a wounded baitfish.
One last lure to definitely take note of if you’re planning to try for a trophy largemouth this summer is Culprit’s tomato colored plastic worms. Although plastic worms are nothing new, this neon orange color is noticeably more visible then other worm colors; especially if your local bass honeyhole is relatively muddy, this added color in the water can set the difference between a good day and a great day.
So when you head to your local store to stock up on your summer fishing gear, don’t be intimidated by the wide variety of lures. Instead, try out these four simple, yet very effective lures so you can spend less time shopping and more time fishing.
