Tackle Tips
While the lures, lines, rods and reels have changed over the years, the technique of working the lure stays the same when you’re walking the dog. Most likely, the spinning or casting tackle you have will suffice for this summer bass technique, but if in the market for some new tackle here are some ideas.
Best for this walk the dog technique is a stiff graphite rod with a parabolic action–not a soft tip as for worm fishing. Any spinning or casting reel can be used, although I like a casting tackle best. Consider braided line. The reduced line stretch makes for quicker action to get the best lure-dancing result. Use a short 3-foot length of mono on the end of the braid to make for quicker and easier knot tying and lure changing.
Lures include the basics of wood (rare today), hard foam or hollow plastic. Realize that these lures are simple cigar shapes, with a belly and tail hook, no lip or extra bells and whistles. Any tackle shop can show you a wide selection for summer fun. The rest is up to you.
