Palm Beach Inshore & Offshore Report: April 2018

by Captain Weston Russell, Contributing Writer

Welcome to the Coastal Angler fishing forecast for April. Expect great dolphin fishing this month. Migratory fish will be heading north for the summer and you should be out there heading them off. April dolphin will be in the 20lb class range, and hungry to eat anything that will fit in their mouth. Live bait will work wonders, but trolling will catch them too. When you’re on the fish be on the lookout for followers. There could be a 50lb fish swimming just feet from the boat. Good luck.

Another drag screaming fish visiting this month will be the mighty kingfish. These toothy critters will cut through mono like butter. You must use wire leader if you’re looking to land one. Light wire will get you more bites, but heavier wire would be the best. Want to catch a 40lb plus monster? Use a live blue runner with a trailer hook. Remember big fish eat big baits. The reefs off Juno ledge will hold the big ones, so head north out of Palm Beach inlet. #fishdip

If you’re a bottom bouncer. There will be fat muttons under the kingfish schools. Use long leaders and a good chunk of cut bait. Bonito strip will do the trick. Let the line out far and wait for the taps. 1-2-3. Set the hook! Big muttons are big for a reason. They have great eyesight and will pass up a cut bait if it’s not presented correctly. Tight lines!

So I gave you a few tips for April. All you need to do is get off the couch and go get them!
