April has netted me quite a few wahoo in the past. Although scattered this time of year, fishing on an outgoing tide around the inlets you will be sure to earn your stripes. I have also caught some smaller wahoo jigging the deeper wrecks from 250 to 300 feet of water. Look for color changes and slow troll along the clean side with a live gog. Be sure not to troll too fast, or else your bait will not look natural and your bites will be limited.
Kingfishing in April is very solid with some decent sized 15 to 20 pounders caught from 160 to 180 feet of water slow trolling a live gog or even drifting a pilchard. Many of my bites have been at mid depth, so make sure to use an egg weight to get your bait down some. Around the deep wrecks straight out from the Pompano Beach pier there have even been reports of some 30 plus pounders being caught.
For those Kayak anglers that have never caught a cobia from a kayak, this is the month that netted me my first cobia off the yak. Try fishing around the second and third reef drifting with a live pilchard, one on top and one mid depth. You can also pick up a nice sailfish around the third reef as well.
While offshore look for some thick weed lines or anything floating that could potentially hold schools of dolphin. Also, try to get offshore after a windy day because that east wind will blow debris and the mahi mahi closer to shore in depths of 100 to 300 feet, which makes it accessible for offshore kayak anglers.
The bottom fishing in April has produced some awesome gag groupers and the occasional mutton snapper. Using a glow in the dark or tiger striped colored jig over the deep wrecks can help in catching some great bottom fish.
As the weather starts to heat up so will tournament season!
