In addition to a shaded playground, restrooms, walking paths, picnic pavilions and fitness stations, the park features an accessible kayak launch and a sandy beach. Parks like this and the nearby Matlacha Community Park are ideal for families with young children. One parent can take the kids for a restroom break or enjoy time at the playground while the other prepares gear before or after paddling.
Plenty of free parking is available. However, visitors cannot pull up directly next to the launch area. The carry is relatively short, but those with heavier kayaks may want to bring a kayak cart or enlist a friend to help transport their gear.
Many paddlers are especially excited about the launch’s proximity to the Kismet Mangrove Tunnel. Paddling through the tunnel is a fun, immersive experience, and it also serves as a convenient shortcut to the numbered Calusa Blueway markers on the east side of Matlacha Pass. The area offers excellent opportunities for fishing, wildlife viewing and exploring some of the Blueway’s more intricate routes. It is also a great place to sharpen navigational skills as I can personally attest that it is easy to get turned around in this section of the Blueway.
Tropicana Park is located on the northern section of the Spreader Canal, which can be busy at times. Paddlers should remain aware of boat traffic and wakes. The canal is a slow-speed, minimum wake zone, but precautions are still necessary. For those interested in guided tours or kayak rentals, Gulf Coast Kayak is located less than two miles down the canal at Sirenia Vista Park.
With the addition of Tropicana Park, the City of Cape Coral has provided paddlers with another excellent access point featuring quality amenities and convenient access to some of Southwest Florida’s most enjoyable paddling waters. Be sure to add it to your Blueway bucket list. Tropicana Park is located at 4101 Tropicana Parkway, Cape Coral, FL 33993
