Drake Bay Fishing Forecast and Report September/October 2015

Drake Bay Fishing Forecast and Report

Water temperatures have been cooling and Drake Bay fishing is heating up! Trolling around Caño Island is really good, we’ve had a lot of action with wahoos. We often have more than twenty five wahoo bites on any given day. In addition mackerel and yellowfin tuna are biting too. For those who like jigging, cubera snappers and amberjacks will be biting from one hundred to one hundred fifty feet of water, you will have to rig with wire because the wahoo like jigs too. As a bonus, you can enjoy the spectacle of humpback whales near Caño Island. Those whales will be around until November. Along the coast close to the Drake Bay area, roosterfish will be biting both live bait and top water lures. Other species such as sierra mackerel, barracuda and jacks will be in the mix too.

Up the Sierpe River is a unique environment. Fruit from the trees that grow along the river drop into the water and the machaca feed on these at the surface. That gives us the opportunity to catch them with top water lures. Rain makes the fishing very good up the river where species such as snook and mangrove snapper will be biting in the channels and lagoons where the Sierpe River begins.

As the rain continues to cool the water and flush logs and other objects from the rivers, species like mahi mahi will congregate closer to the shore.

Tight Lines,

Capt Pablo Chaves
