Southern Zone Costa Rica Fishing Report January 2016 by the Crocodile Bay Fishing Director Todd Staley
The southern zone finally saw double digit sails after a long dry spell. Boat operators are slapping themselves to see if it is true. Warm water has kept them and dorado away for months but it seems the “normal” season might just be arriving. A few blue and striped marlin have been taken as of late also. Tuna are also passing through with the dolphins. Fish to 150 lbs are making lots of sushi and putting massage therapists in the area to work relieving aching muscles and lower backs.
Inshore is a broken record. It is still excellent. Lots of roosters, jacks, and dinner size snapper. Matapalo and Iguana Reef have given up a few 50 plus pound roosterfish and some 30 pound cubera snapper have come from the volcanic reefs in the Golfo Dulce. Deep jiggers are hitting some amberjack and those dropping several hundred feet are taking a few grouper and tile fish.
