Gulf of Nicoya Fishing Report and Forecast February and March 2016

Gulf of Nicoya Fishing
Big bluefin trevally taken on a Shimano Waxwing

February and March are mid-summer months and means occasional northern winds. These winds can be strong at times but tend to bring in baitfish like sardines and anchovies by the truck load. Following these baitfish are the predators including the highly sought after corvinas (seabass). Along with the bass come large schools of jacks, trevallys, and skipjack tunas. Jigging, popping and fly fishing are excellent ways to get in the action. The water this time of the year is usually quite clear, look for pockets of green water along the beaches or in current breaks, this is where most of the action will be. It is also the time of year for big roosterfish. We always pick up a few fish in the 80-100 lb range this time of year.

The bottom fishing will vary depending on water temperature and colder water draws in good numbers of groupers. Snappers are always around and they too can be found gorging themselves on the large amounts of baitfish. Expect good numbers of sierra mackerels to join the part as well.
