Spednic Lake Offers Some of the Best Bass Fishing in the Country

Can you really say that one lake or stream has the best bass fishing in the country? My friend Pat Patterson swears that Spednic Lake is the greatest spot you’ll ever come across. It’s an impossible theory to prove, but after a couple days there I can tell you that Spednic makes a pretty good case.
Spednic Lake is part of the Chiputneticook Lakes chain along the U.S.-Canadian border—Washington County in the state of Maine and York County in the province of New Brunswick, Canada. With 17,219 acres of surface area and little development along 106 miles of shoreline, it’s a true wilderness getaway.
I was lucky enough to be staying at Wheaton’s Lodge in Forest City, Maine. Owned and operated by Pat and his wife, Sandy, Wheaton’s is a lakeside treasure on the shores of nearby East Grand Lake. I pulled in at dinnertime on my first day and immediately felt right at home. They greeted me warmly and led me to my home for the next two days, a beautiful, simple cabin with a screened-in porch and a woodstove.
The next morning we drove about 10 minutes to Spednic and the scenery immediately struck me. It seems literally chiseled out of a mountain. Soon we were on the water in a Grand Laker, a wide-bellied canoe that can easily handle big guys with camping and fishing gear and an outboard motor. Over the next two days we experienced plenty of weather swings, from cloudy and windy to bright and sunny, but the Grand Laker navigated flawlessly. And our Typhoon polarized sunglasses made it easy to handle the changing skies, thanks to their water repellent, smudge-proof, anti-static AquaView lenses.
And the fishing? Well, let’s just say it more than lived up to its billing. Pat and I reeled in over a hundred smallmouth along with multiple perch, northern pike and salmon.
Of course, every great fishing trip includes a great meal. On that first day we pulled the Grand Laker ashore in a remote location and cooked a great lunch over the fire. It’s a perk that Wheaton’s Lodge has been providing for 62 years and they really deliver.
If you’re seeking a plush hotel with hot tubs and cappuccinos then Wheaton’s Lodge isn’t the place for you. But if you want a real wilderness experience and some of the best fishing in the country, head to Forest City, Maine!
