While September is still very hot and humid here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The fishing starts to get better offshore. The rip lines and oil rigs have been producing good numbers of tuna. The bait has been plentiful at most of the floaters and on the shelf. Threadfin herring, topwater poppers and chunking pogies and red meat are taking the most yellowfin. Its best to scale down to extra long 80 or 60 lb. fluorocarbon leaders with small circle hooks when targeting the yellowfin in the blue water this time of year. If trolling suits your fancy better September usually is one of the hottest months for white marlin, blue marlin and sailfish in the canyons to our east. The mahi are still around and the wahoo usually start to show on the shelf by months end.
August made for some long runs to blue water out of Mississippi. Many days the west winds and high Mississippi pushed the stream 130 miles plus out. Im crossing my fingers that it pushes further north soon with the stacked up pelagic in tow.
Get offshore and hold onto summer fishing for a little longer.
