Venice Inshore Fishing Report: Jan 2014

reds

by Capt. Dustin Bounds

January usually means cold, windy and a rising Mississippi River, but you can still load the boat down with plenty of fish. If possible plan your trip around the cold fronts. Usually around the third day after a front is best.

The reds and trout have left the river into the outer bays in search of clean water. The MS River is at 5 ft . and will continue to rise throughout the spring. Blind Bay, Redfish Bay and Garden Isle Bay are the areas you want to target. The two things you want to look for is clean water and bait. I like to start on points or at the mouths of canals and work my way in. Popping corks with a gulp or market bait along the canes is the best option.

If your looking for trout you should try areas like Buras and Empire. The Vouu Shrimp has been on fire. We have been out fishing live bait with it. Its durability and natural look makes it an awesome weapon. Yellow cotton Bay, Schofield Bay and Bay Adams all hold good trout. You can either bounce a matrix shad in deep holes or use the Vudu Shrimp under a cork.

Come make your own fish story to tell! Capt. Dustin Bound
