Offshore-Pelagics Forecast for August

CAN YOU TAKE THE HEAT?

I’m sure all of you have been asking yourself this question over and over again in the past couple of months. It has no doubt been an almost unbearably hot summer so far this year. The fishing has been suffering a bit because of the high water temperatures as well. However, with August here, the end to the heat wave is almost over. But…not yet! August is notoriously the hottest, most miserable month of the year to go offshore fishing. That being said, the white marlin bite just before the full moon in the northern part of the state is awesome, the mahi are still in full force in the 25-50 mile range, and the blue ones are still patrolling the break looking for an easy meal.

A great mahi catch from a trip with Capt. John

To sum up August offshore fishing in NC…go early to beat the heat, and troll the shallower side of the break for meatfish and offshore for billfish. The most important part is to remember that the summer is winding down and there aren’t many days left to enjoy some quality time with friends and family. Go out on the water, catch some fish, and most importantly…HAVE FUN!!  The hot fall bite is just around the corner, but the ocean still has plenty of surprises waiting for you right now also.
