[dropcap]M[/dropcap]ark your calendar for the 7th Annual Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup, which is slated for Saturday, July 26, 20143. Both volunteers and sponsors are needed to make this event a success. Volunteer as a group or individual, young and old, this event is for everyone.
“Our goal is to continue to increase our participation, more people equals more trash that we can collect. In our first six years of the event, we have engaged more than 4,500 volunteers and more than 1,600 boats, which have collected more than 53.2 tons of trash from the waters of Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties,” says April Price, the event coordinator.
Twenty-five different cleanup will be “attacked”. Volunteers can cleanup via boat, kayak, canoe, paddle board, wave runner or work a shoreline area by foot. Participants will receive cleanup supplies, data cards to complete, and event t-shirt and instructions when they arrive at their sites on July 26. Boats will receive a commemorative burgee to fly, which signifies that they are involved with the cleanup effort. All volunteers will be invited to a “Thank You BBQ” scheduled for Sunday, August 17, 2014. Data for the 2014 cleanup will be announced at the barbeque.

“This is an “All Hands on Deck” effort,” says Price. “This is also a terrific opportunity to pick up some of those precious community service hours forstudents and scouts.”
There are several Coastal Cleanups that take place throughout the Treasure Coast which are all vital to the health of our beaches and shore line. However this cleanup specifically concentrates on the waterways, spoil islands and area canals. It’s easy to join the fun.
