The kayak industry has a new power couple. Hobie Kayak’s Pro Angler series and the Power-Micro Anchor are a marriage made in heaven. The ultimate shallow water sight fishing machine joins forces with the game changing hands free anchoring system. The new Power-Pole Micro is the hottest innovation in the kayak industry since Hobie introduced the Mirage Drive in 1997.
Maybe the greatest asset the Micro posses is that it is not Pro Angler specific. After three years in the making it is able to offer a variety of small boat owners the ability to stop on the dime from any position on your boat, as all units come with a remote that you wear around your neck. Meanwhile, as you read this, Luther Clifers, of Yak Attack is working on bracket systems for most every major kayak manufacturer to become Micro friendly. This means that if you are paddling, drifting or poling you will be able to stop silently before you run over your targeted fish. If you are like me and have the opportunity to sight fish the shallows of your home waters this Power-Pole has changed the balance of power. No more having to sit back down to access your stake-out pole or anchor, then clunking it around to get it set. Shaving just a couple of seconds off your ability to make an accurate cast is often the difference between landing the fish of a lifetime or having it scurry off before you get your shot. Alas, the Micro is not just for sight fishing, as most kayak anglers fish seated, this incredible innovation gives anglers an advantage never imagined. Whether you are flipping into the reeds for largemouth, running crank baits in swift currents for smallies or stalking redfish on the flats, the Micro provides the unprecedented way to silently anchor in shallow water.
Don’t think that the Power-Pole Micro is just an option for kayaks. It is also a perfect fit for poling skiffs, Gheenoes and jon boats. At less than 10 lbs. it is not going to weigh you down and you will be able to slide into those super skinny spots that fish love to forage in.
The Micro can be easily transferred from one boat to another. Hobie Pro-Staffer, Jose Chavez, told me that it takes him less than 5 minutes to move the unit from his PA14 to his Dragon Fly poling skiff using the universal mount included in the Micro package.
Installation of the 2013 ICAST Best In Show winner is extremely uncomplicated. Hobie has designed its own PA mounting bracket. It allows you to install the 8.5lb unit without having to drill any holes in your boats hull. The Micro will run on a plug and play after market battery pack and charger that plugs directly into the unit. The battery pack/charger will retail for $149.95 and will be available later this year. In the meantime, you can rig the included cable to a standard 12 volt battery that you can pick up for about $30 at your favorite big box home store. My good friend Sam Root, who has been in on the ground floor of this game changing innovation, guided me through the install. OK, he installed it as I am mechanically challenged. We decided to do a temporary install running the cable on the outside of the hull to avoid drilling, as the battery pack will be available in the near future. For more installation instructions go online to SaltyShores.com or the Sam Root channel on YouTube. To see the Micro in action visit www.power-pole.com. The Micro retails for $595 and the 8.5 Micro Spike has an MSRP of $95, but it the unit is compatible with other 3/4inch spikes.
