A Bad Case Of Cabin Fever

Waiting on spring fishing got you down? Got a little bit of cabin fever?

For most of us it isn’t this bad waiting on the spring runs. This trout from the Decorah Fish Hatchery in Decorah, Iowa, had apparently had too much.

This photo posted to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Facebook page shows us all what real cold is. According to the post, the air temperature was -22 degrees when this trout decided to jump out of the water. Like a kid making the mistake of licking a flagpole in sub-freezing temps, the trout stuck fast to the aluminum baffle on the wall of the raceway and froze solid.

Take heart. Following a relatively mild winter for most of the country, some of the best fishing of the year is just around the corner. For our southern states, warm spells over the next few weeks should have many species thinking about spawning. In the far south, it may already be going on full tilt. Those up north will have to wait a little while longer for springtime conditions to take hold, but it’s coming. Hang in there.
