As February approaches, the winter weather conditions in Abaco continue to be seasonally mild with the occasional cold front pushing through. On the rare days the reef is not suitable for diving, we dive sites accessible by land transportation, including coastal drift diving and inland blue holes. Air temperature has been ranging from a cool 65°F at night to a delightful 80°F during the day. Water temperature is currently 75°F, yet a wetsuit is recommended for that little extra layer of thermal protection. With no current and no plankton bloom, visibility is incredible. The coral appears even more spectacular and colorful with a variety of tropical fish darting in and out. Sharks, spotted eagle rays, grouper and turtles are frequently seen along the reef. As a reminder, Nassau grouper season remains closed through the end of the month. The Full Snow Moon, also known as the Hunger Moon, occurs on Friday, February 14 at 6:54 p.m. For those of you simply looking for some sunshine or needing to escape the frigid North, February is a great time to visit Abaco before spring breakers and summer crowds. We recommend making reservations in advance. When not diving or snorkeling, there are many other activities to consider—renting a car for a day to explore the beaches and pine forests of Great Abaco, bird watching, bone fishing, island hopping and catching a ferry to one of the offshore cays—or just relaxing. There is plenty to do, or not do, and we are here to help make your stay an ‘I can’t wait to return’ kind of one!
