Add Fishing to Your New Year’s Resolutions

By Allison Miles

It’s hard to believe another year has passed us by. January is a month to reflect upon the previous 365 days with the question “Did I do enough?”

Each one of us mentally puts together our New Year’s resolutions. It’s almost like playing the lottery. You buy that ticket and dream, plan and plot all of the glorious ways you’re going to spend your winnings. Resolutions sometimes feel the same way to me. I sit and plan out all of the fantastic adventures and ambitious goals I want to put into action and tell myself “No problem, I’ve got a whole 365 days to do it”. I vow to eat healthier, to work out more and to get into the best shape I’ve ever been in. I’ll put more emphasis on my work-life balance. I’ll see my family more. I’m sure some of these sound familiar to you.

My Angler-2-Angler tip this month is to make sure you don’t forget fishing when putting together your resolution lineup. If fishing is an important part of your life, your story and your passion, make sure you give it a promise for 2014 as well. I have a blog, so a few years ago I started to list my fishing resolutions where everyone could hold me accountable. I picked two goals that I thought were achievable and enjoyable and I put my pen to paper. My two constants are catching a new species and learning a new technique or method of fishing. Sometimes I become so complacent with what I know that I continue fishing my tried and true method, which in the end holds me back.

I think you’ll find that when you select your 2014 fishing goals and pursue them, you’ll not only learn something new or improve your game, but these resolutions will also open you up to new friendships. You’ll meet new people through your research and you’ll gain even more than you originally set out to.

We all think that winter is lousy for fishing, but in reality it’s just as important as the rest of the year. The fishing shows, seminars and lectures during the cold months will prep you for even more success once the season starts. Add fishing to your New Year’s resolutions list anglers and turn those goals into achievements.
