Boston Harbor is poised for excellent striped bass fishing throughout August. Surface blitzes where bait, current and structure merge should remain consistent throughout the month. The massive schools of juvenile herring should stay put in the harbor for at least a few more weeks. The stripers feeding on baitfish are usually very full and a bit picky. Th e majority of the herring are 4-5 inches in length. Be sure to downsize your gear. Use small soft plastics, lures and jigs on light fluorocarbon leaders. Fly-fishing on these schools with small herring, or chartreuse and white patterns, oft en proves to be more effective than light tackle. Live lining mackerel in and around these schools is the easiest way to get your lines tight. Keep an eye out for the tell tale flips of pogies throughout August. Large schools are due to arrive any day with monster bass and blues in chase. capt.
