There is absolutely nothing like summer kayak fishing in South Florida. With all the upcoming tournaments and good fishing in general, it’s prime time for kayak anglers.
Targeting kingfish in June will produce some awesome catches in depths from 60 to 120 feet of water. I’ve caught some slobs really shallow in the 60 to 70 foot range, which is perfect for offshore kayak anglers. Try slow trolling with a downrigger mid depth for killer results. On your top bait you can even catch some nice Spanish mackerel, which is always a treat.
Wahoo fishing is strong on the deep wrecks in June, especially just before and after the full moon on an outgoing tide. Anglers jigging the deep wrecks for big amberjacks have gotten lucky with solid 40 to 50 pound fish. The morning bite is key. The sooner you make it out the better chance of getting a wahoo bite. Make sure if you’re heading out before first light that you have all your kayak safety equipment, including a light. Since kayak anglers can’t high speed troll, targeting wahoo is all about your live bait presentation. I like to go stealthy when targeting wahoo. I go with 50 pound mono leader tied directly to 9 to 12 inches of wire. I like to use an albright knot to attach the wire. I use a 3/0 to 4/0 size J hook and always use a stinger rig. The stinger is your lifeline when catching wahoo and kingfish. When connecting your stinger to your live gog, make sure to leave some slack between your connection and stinger hook, so the bait can swim naturally.

Blackfin tuna are in full swing in the month of June on the jig and live bait. I’ve caught most of my jumbos drifting over the deep wrecks from 200 to 280 feet. The pink jig has always been my go to for blackfins. When using live bait, I don’t worry too much about using wire, because I still get many hook ups with jumbo blackfin tuna when wired up. Of course, using mono leader instead of wire will increase your chances for hook ups, but also cut offs.

Before heading out for all these awesome pelagics, try using a top water Yo-Zuri and putting out a line on the beach for a nice tarpon or snook before heading out. This time of year they are running up and down the beaches.
