[dropcap]O[/dropcap]n one of our most recent Sunday Fun Day fishing trips with an old fishing buddy of mine turned out to be something we did not expect. So this is one of those days when we just rolled with the punches and ended up having a pretty enjoyable day kayak fishing on the Cape Fear River.
So our Sunday started out by taking our Native Watercraft Slayer ProPel’s across the River to the Brunswick County side. There is a nice flat off one of the islands and we were hoping to find some Reds or Flounder as the tide started to come in. So we pulled up our drives got shallow anchored up and started working some soft plastic and we each put out a Carolina Rig with a Mud Minnow on just to increase our chances.
After a good while of working the area we decide that we need to move up behind the island and work a drop off as the tide really started to pour in. So we got to our new spot and started working or baits again. Not long one of my buddies Carolina Rigs got hit. After a good fight we were a little disappointed to see a 25in Long Nose Gar darting around our legs. So I did what any good fishing partner would do. I netted him and let the other guy get the hook out of that tooth filled mouth.
So I am down one and getting itchy to settle the score just then a hit, a Skate he did not swallow the hook so I made quick work of him this my pliers and back at it. Before I know it my Mud Minnow getting chewed up. Hook set and had a rather unexpected fight on my hands. A few minutes later it was a Blue Cat.
A few Skates and 2 more Blue Cat’s later we where both a little surprised at what we were catching. We have not had any real rain in a long time so the water we where fishing should have been producing Reds, Flounder and in the hopes of a Trout. But here we were catching Gar and Cat Fish.
So we stayed changed our rigs around some and continued to fish and catch what we weren’t looking for but at the end of the day we had a great time. Mostly laughing at the fish we were catching. I don’t want to say that we had an inshore junk fish slam but we realized quickly that if we changed how we were fishing we were still going to catch.
So that is what we did and had a fun morning on the water. I think the only real sting of the day was when we saw a guy we see most Sunday in the same area hold up a 20in Flounder as we got closer to the ramp. So Change of plans again we should have stuck to the original plan and one of us might have come home with a nice Flounder. But the day was so odd and we had such a great time making fun of each other on what we were pulling in I’d say we had a good day on the water kayak fishing.
