Bottom fishermen and most offshore enthusiasts rejoice as the calendar season turns into the month of June. The lengthy fisheries management closure of black sea bass comes to an end and allows recreational anglers to once again “catch and keep” one of the tastiest of all the bottom dwelling species. Black sea bass must measure 13-inches overall length to be a designated “keeper”. Anglers are allowed five “keeper fish” per person as the daily bag limit. The season opening brings much excitement, as black sea bass populations have made an incredible showing of late on all the reefs and wrecks of the Treasure Coast, from 40 foot to 180 foot depths. Large schools of big, hungry sea bass await whatever baits anglers might deploy! Sea bass will eat virtually any bait, dead or live, presented to them in their salty bottom reef zones. Thirty to fifty pound tackle, with 3/0 to 5/0 hooks, laden with cut bait will prove the most effective “bass getters”. There is no “sure thing” when it comes to fishing, but the opportunity of catching black sea bass offshore comes pretty darn close! These schools of fish will be “thick and hungry”! June has become a favorite month for anglers as many species are “in season” and are available for harvest, including grouper and vermilion snapper. The opening of the black sea bass fishery simply puts the icing on the cake for offshore anglers and kicks off the glorious, summer season for fishing in Florida.
