Drift Fishing Report: February 2019

Winter fishing in South Florida.

I often get asked by clients calling in to book a charter in the winter months, “what can I expect to catch this time of year?”’ That is a very hard question to answer. In the wintertime in Boynton Beach. there’s no consistency because of the drastic changes the weather can bring. We could go from one day of calm mild winds, have 80 degree temperature to the next day of temperatures in the 50’s with strong gusty winds. A cold front approaching can bring drastic changes in wind velocities and directions.

Great winter time fishing on the drift.
Great winter time fishing on the drift.

YES, that affects our catches from one trip to the next. East winds are favorable for catches but if it’s a strong wind then the seas get rough. It’s hard to get the perfect scenario of calm seas and great catches! I try telling the clients to just pick a day and time that fits their schedule and roll with it. Here is a picture of a great day at sea recently on one of our 4-hour drift fishing trips. Kingfish, mahi-mahi, wahoo and more! The next day we had a very light catch. So please do not wait till you hear the fishing is good for by the time you get out there they could be gone .
