May 19th marked the fish off for the inaugural and coveted title of “Treasure Coast Caster of the Year”. The top five middle school and high school Treasure Coast Caster’s (TCC) from the year competed for the title. Middle school contenders were Andrew Evans, Billy Kidd, Trace Meding, Scott Smith and Savannah Ward. High school contenders were Maxwell Higgins, Dylora Kohler, Colton Surrency, Shane Surrency and Brennen Tessier.
This was the first Treasure Coast Casters tournament held at Jaycee Park since Hurricane Sandy. With the docks finally repaired, fishing commenced at 6:30 a.m. and ended at noon.
Anglers were given a fish list with how many fish of each species they could catch but point values were not listed. Eighteen fish were caught, several of them really nice catches: Shane Surrency brought in a 5.11-pound trout, a snapper and a sheepshead; Dylora Kohler a 3.13-pound trout and two snapper, one redfish, a bluefish and another trout; Andrew Evans a 1.8-pound trout and two snapper; Billy Kidd a 1.10-pound trout; Trace Meding a 2.10-pound redfish and a sheepshead; Savannah Ward, a bluefish; Scott Smith a 1.6-pound trout; and Brennen Tessier a 15-ounce trout.
The Treasure Coast Caster of the Year, Dylora Kohler, a student at Ft. Pierce Central, won the title with 75 points. 2nd Place went to Shane Surrency (Lincoln Park Academy), 40 points. The 3rd Place slot went to Trace Meding (Westgate K-8) 35 points.
