As reported by the Tampa Bay Times, Claudia McCorkle obtained a special permit to have an elephant present for her 60th birthday celebration in Reddington Beach, Florida. It seems that jumping through the hoops of City Hall was well worth it, as Judy, the 6200 lb. elephant, was a smashing hit with guests and fellow beach-goers. In fact, Judy’s play in the surf was so entertaining, guests refused to go inside for dinner, not wanting to miss out on the rare spectacle.
This did beg the question — if elephants are allowed on the beach, what does that mean for our four-legged canine companions? Fortunately, the Mayor, Nick Simons, was in attendance to speak on the issue.
“A lot of dogs on the beach as an ordinance as opposed to a one-time event with an elephant?” he asked. “I fail to see the comparison.”
Sorry, dog lovers, it remains the status quo, for now…
