Explore Shark Valley Loop By: Wes Tallyn

Hidden in the Everglades off of Highway 41 lies Shark Valley Visitor Center and Shark Valley Loop. The 15-mile-long loop takes you deep into the Everglades for the experience of a lifetime! A tram will take you the entire loop and out to the observation tower deep in the wetlands and sweep you away from urban Florida. If you would rather, you can bring or rent a bicycle or just hike and go at your own leisure.

The park lies within the Everglades National Park and an entry fee is required at the gate for access to the park, but it is worth every penny. Along the trail you will encounter a wetland system overflowing with life. American alligators line the shorelines in the Winter months and tuck away in the water during the warmer months. It’s one of the best locations in the country to get up close and personal with alligators.

You will also encounter a wide range of different bird species. You will encounter wading birds like anhinga, herons and egrets, as well as, hawks and kites. A ditch runs along the trail and the water is teeming with fish. You are not allowed to fish along the loop, but you will see large fish such as Florida Gar, Largemouth Bass, Tilapia, and Mayan Cichlads swimming in the clear waters.

Shark Valley is a must see for outdoor lovers and is easily accessible for most people in south Florida. Get out there and experience the Everglades in a way like none other!
