Fishing From the Shore

With boaters and kayakers seemingly dominating the fishing scene, it’s no wonder anglers from the shore are hungry to land that bragging size bass. So what’s the deal – where should the shore guys go, and what should they use? First off , Winthrop is arguably the top spot on Boston Harbor with over seven hot locations to land BIG Stripers. Winthrop beach, the sisters, the water tower, and Coughlin Park are all proven areas known to have given up a few trophies. One of the most popular spots is Deer Island, often packed with anglers lined up along the rocks and jetties casting the contents of their bags in hopes of catching a cow. With the past heat wave and high water temperatures, anglers are wise to hit it early in the morning or better yet, fish by the light of the moon. I’ve seen smiles and frowns a-like from customers checking back in with us aft er a day of fi shing. I’m happy to report, even with the extreme heat there are still a good number of stripers being weighed in at the shop. Although some are having luck throwing Storm Shads, Kastmasters and my favorite the purple Bomber, most would agree that the night bite is all about the chunk. Look to chunk baits like sea worms, clams, squid, mackerel or pogy for your best shot at a big one. Change out your bait often and don’t be afraid to move to a different spot. Be sure to stop by for the latest news on what’s hot in Winthrop. Paul Hennick is the manager of Bob’s Bait shack in winthrop. www.bobsbaitshack.net
