Florida Keys Dolphin Rodeo May 6-8

Anglers can mark the opening of the Florida Keys Dolphin Rodeo “fishing” season by participating in the ninth annual Nick Sheahan Dolphin Rodeo set for Friday through Sunday, May 6-8, in Tavernier.

The family friendly challenge kicks off at 8 p.m. Friday, May 6, with dinner, beverages, music, live and silent auctions, a 50/50 raffle and a rules meeting at Tavernier Creek Marina, mile marker 90.8. The kick-off event is open to the public and tickets are $25.

Adult and junior anglers age 12 and under are to fish Saturday, May 7, from lines-in at 7:30 a.m. to lines-out at 4:30 p.m., and Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cash prizes of $3,000, $1,500 and $1,000 are to be awarded to the top three adult anglers catching the heaviest dolphinfish. First- through third-place trophies and prizes are slated for the top junior anglers.

A $25,000 cash prize awaits the angler who breaks the current Florida state record for dolphin. Prizes also are to be given for the largest wahoo and largest yellowfin or blackfin tuna caught. One entry per species per angler is allowed.

Early entry fees are $185 per adult and $50 per junior angler for the Florida Keys Dolphin Rodeo.

The tournament honors Nick Sheahan, a beloved student at the Upper Keys’ Coral Shores High School who died in 2004 from shallow-water blackout while freediving.

Proceeds from the annual tournament benefit the Nick Sheahan Scholarship Fund for graduating Coral Shores High School seniors.
