Fly Fishing

July is one of my favorite months to fly fish Pine Island Sound. A lot of anglers spend this time of year hiding from the heat but there are still plenty of opportunities for those willing to get out early and put in the time. The fishing can be excellent if you understand the summer patterns and know how to work around the weather.

The biggest thing this month is the heat. It is no joke out there. Early mornings are usually the most comfortable and often provide the best fishing conditions as well. Water temperatures rise fast and so do air temperatures. Make sure you bring plenty of water and drink it throughout the day. Lightweight sun shirts a good hat and sunscreen are must haves. Heat exhaustion can sneak up on you quickly especially when you are focused on fish and standing in the sun for hours.

Tarpon are still a major player throughout the Sound in July. While the peak migration may be behind us there are still plenty of fish moving through the area. Early mornings with calm conditions give anglers the best chance to spot rolling fish and make a good presentation. Some days require patience but there are still shots at fish that can make your entire season.

The backcountry bite stays strong this time of year too. Snook are hanging around shorelines and points with moving water. Redfish can still be found around oyster bars and grass flats especially during lower light periods.

Juvenile tarpon remain a great option when conditions get tough and can provide some exciting action on fly.

One thing that makes July unique is the daily thunderstorms that we so desperately need. Most afternoons we can count on storms building somewhere around us. While they can cut a trip short they can also help the fishing. The hours leading up to a storm often bring increased cloud cover stronger winds and falling pressure. Those changes can really get fish moving and feeding. Some of the best bites of the summer happen right before a storm arrives.

That said safety should always come first. Keep an eye on the radar and pay attention to lightning. If a storm is getting close it is time to get off the water. There will always be another fish tomorrow.

For anglers willing to brave the heat July can be a rewarding month in Pine Island Sound. The tarpon are still around and every morning offers a chance at something special. Get out early, stay hydrated, and take advantage of everything our fishery has to offer this summer.
