Hex patterns are probably the most effective nymphs for catching steelhead in the fall and winter months. They are large, have tons of motion, and are quite easy to imitate with traditional materials. For this bug, the first step is to impale the rabbit strip onto the hook before you place the hook in the vise. This pattern is designed to ride hook point up, much like a jig. To achieve this, tie the lead wire and bead chain eyes to the topside of the hook. This minimizes snags on the bottom. Not only do you get a cleaner drift, but you’re more likely to hook fish in the top jaw (huge advantage). November is by far my favorite month to engage these fish, and this season is shaping up to be a good one!
